“A fire has broken out at a nuclear power station in France, leaving several people injured, emergency officials and media reports say.

Fire crews are tackling the blaze at the Fessenheim plant in eastern France near the German border.

Its twin reactors are the oldest in France.”

This fire was not the first accident in 2012 the Plant is one of the oldest in the French repertoire, still in the tolerances, but the containments are some of the weakest build ever in europe. The plant realses several TBq of Tritium and Iodine every year.

Question: as the german Gamma-Dose Stations stopped to work at about 10:00 Sep.5.2012 MEST, i call everyone in the closer Area of Freiburg / Breisgau, France and Germany to collect their private radiation measuremanents and be aware for a raise of local doserate / and / or Contamination.

Will start my loggin here @ Berlin / Germany as soon i get home (DiY Geigershield with SBM20 and RS232-loggin)

any news and question, please write me a mail to geiger_count(a&t)yahoo.de

IMPORTANT NOTE: this thread is not to panik anyone, i just want to see, why the oficial count rates are not available and if there was a loss of radioactive material though.

quantumaniac:

Curiosity, NASA’s largest and most complex Mars Rover ever, is scheduled to land in LESS THAN AN HOUR - starting at approximately 1:31 am EST. It takes approximately 7 for the rover to decelerate from 13,000 mph to 0! To NASA scientists, this has been called the “seven minutes of terror.” You can watch the live stream from NASA TV here.

Radioactive Kelp

According to a new scientific study, kelp on the California coastline was contaminated with short-lived radioisotopes due to Japan’s Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant disaster. This effectively proves the theories that the radiation reached the United States coastline. The kelp was collected off of Orange County, Santa Cruz - and many other coastal locations. Radioactive iodine was detected, which was released from the damaged nuclear reactor.

Giant kelp is the largest species of algae and grows faster than nearly anything else on Earth. Its large, dense forests off the coast of California accumulate iodine, thus making it a useful way to check how far radioactive material spreads.

The concentration in certain areas was about 250 times higher than levels of the isotope found before the accident. “Basically, we saw it in all the California kelp blades we sampled,” said Steven Manley, a CSU Long Beach biology professor who specializes in kelp. Despite what many believe about radioactivity, it had no harmful effects on the kelp, local fish or other marine life. In fact, it was virtually undetectable. In fact, the isotope found, Iodine 131 - “has an eight-day half-life, so it’s pretty much all gone,” Manley said. ”But this shows what happens half a world away does effect what happens here. I don’t think these levels are harmful, but it’s better if we don’t have it at all.”

There is no published research on what iodine 131 might do to fish at the levels found in the kelp.”It’s definitely not harmful to humans,” Manley said.

LHCb

Standing for Large Hadron Collider beauty, the LHCb is one of the six particle detector experiments at CERN. One of the primary goals of the detector is to solve the mystery of the Matter-Antimatter symmetry in the universe.

Matter, known as baryonic matter, and anti-matter, likewise known as anti-baryonic matter - are obviously not present in symmetrical amounts in the universe, but current theories says that they should be. When matter and anti-matter collide, they explode and demolish one another in an impressive show - and this should have happened at the beginning of the universe, and the result should have been a matter-less existence. However, baryonic matter prevailed - and the scientists at LHCb hope to determine why.

Neutrinos
With all of the talk about neutrinos...

quantumaniac:

Neutrinos

With all of the talk about neutrinos traveling faster than light, many people aren’t quite sure what a neutrino is! They are one of the most basic and numerous subatomic particles in the universe, but also one of the least understood! In the most basic sense, a neutrino is an electrically neutral, weakly interacting elementary subatomic particle with half-integer spin. This half-integer spin classifies neutrinos as a Fermion. Although neutrinos do have mass and is not completely and accurately known, it is a minuscule amount - even on the subatomic scale.

The neutrino was first proposed by Wolfgang Pauli in 1930, as a way to explain how beta decay should follow the conservations of energy, momentum and angular momentum (spin). It wasn’t until 1942 that someone proposed a way to experimentally detect them; Kan-Chang Wang brought forward the idea of beta-capture. In 1956, Clyde Cowan, Frederick Reines, F.B. Harrison, H.W. Kruse and A.D. McGuire jointly published confirmation that they had detected the neutrino - rewarded with the 1995 Nobel Prize. Reines and Cowan are shown below:

Because they are electrically neutral, they are not affected by electromagnetic forces - and infamously hard to detect. Neutrinos are only affected by the weak force and gravity - so that can travel great distances through matter with little affect. Neutrinos are produced in copious amounts in space by certain types of radioactive decay and nuclear reactions, such as fusion and fission in stars. There are three types, known as ‘flavors,’ of neutrinos - electron neutrinos, tau neutrinos and muon neutrinos.

The post image is part of the Super-Kamioka Nucleon Decay Experiments, abbreviated as Super-K. This neutrino observatory is located underneath Mount Kamioka near the Chubu region of central Japan.

The Big Bang Theory

Althoughthe scientific theory is riveting as well, The Big Bang Theory here is the phenomenal television show. Created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, The Big Bang Theory is centered on five major characters:

Leonard Hofstadter (played by Johnny Galecki)

Sheldon Cooper (played by Jim Parsons)

Penny (played by Kaley Cuoco)

Howard Wolowitz (played by Simon Helberg)

Rajesh Koothrappali (played by Kunal Nayyar)

So why is the show so awesome? The intelligence and geeky attitudes of the four guys is flawlessly contrasted with Penny’s social skills. The four guys work at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

Due to an overwhelmingly positive response, the show has been renewed for at least another three years, through the 2013-2014 season. However, the ratings show no signs of decline - so this show will be around for quite some time.

which is quite coool, as i like them reaaly much :) even if i do not own a TV … *chuckles*

quantumaniac:

The Photoelectric Effect

Ask any average person what Albert Einstein won his Nobel Prize for, and, of course, assuming that they know what a Nobel Prize is - they will most likely answer relativity (or some deviation from the term.) However, most would be surprised to discover that Einstein actually won his only Nobel Prize for his work on quantum theory - by explaining the photoelectric effect.

When light is shone on a piece of metal, a small current results within the metal! This happens because the energy in the light is transferred to the electrons in the metal’s atoms - allowing them to move around. Interestingly, this effect does not occur with every color of light - for example, no intensity of red light will produce a current, but even a very dim blue light will produce the effect.

Scientists in the early twentieth century realized that this effect could not be explained with the description of light as a wave. If light was a wave, the energy would result from its amplitude - or brightness. Einstein realized that the only way to describe this way to conclude that light was actually composed of lots of small packets of energy that behaved like particles - and thus the photon was born. While he did not invent the concept of the photon, he was the first to have a real application for it. He realized that the different colors must have different energies, which are completely condensed in the photon. So, no matter how many red photons hit an electron, they cannot dislodge it simply because they are not energetic enough!

:) solid state radiation detection … thats how it works :)

quantumaniac:

CERN

The European Organization for Nuclear Research, English for Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire - is known as CERN. Established in 1954, CERN is a laboratory used to operate the world’s largest particle physics laboratory. Located in the suburbs of Geneva, Switzerland - CERN, as an organization, comprises 20 member states.

CERN is a term that is frequently misused, it is not an experiment, but rather the laboratory itself - one which represents over 600 universities and 100 nationalities.

CERN houses many particle accelerators and other expensive machinery necessary for high-energy physics research. Besides physics, CERN is most famous for being the effective birthplace of the World Wide Web. Many of the most revolutionary physics breakthroughs of the past four decades have taken place at CERN, including:

1973: The discovery of neutral currents.

1983: The discovery of W and Z bosons.

1995: The first creation of antihydrogen atoms.

2011: Maintaining antihydrogen for over 15 minutes.

Currently, the majority of happenings at CERN are directed towards the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), an enormous experiment aiming to solve many of our most fundamental questions about the universe. Most of the well-known particle detector experiments in the world are a part of the LHC, including:

ALICE: (A Large Ion Collider Experiment)

ATLAS: (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus)

CMS: (Compact Muon Solenoid)

MoEDAL: (Monopole and Exotics Detector At the LHC)

LHCb: (Large Hadron Collider beauty)

LHCf: (Large Hadron Collider forward)

But the LHC is by no means the only exciting experiment at CERN, in fact, here’s the complete list. Over this past weekend, CERN reached a new energy threshold of 4 TeV per beam - awesome!

i would soo love to get the canche and visit the LHC one day … and maybe sneak peak in other projects and experiements … *stunned*

devidsketchbook:

Loops of wispy clouds rise like smoke rings against a background of stars—the products of a NASA rocket launch early Tuesday morning designed to study the upper-level jet stream.

Starting just before 5 a.m. ET, the space agency launched five consecutive sounding rockets from itsWallops Flight Facilityin Virginia as part of theAnomalous Transport Rocket Experiment, or ATREX.Once aloft, each suborbital rocket released a chemical tracer at altitudes between 50 and 90 miles (80 and 145 kilometers)—near the edge of space.

The chemical reacts with water and oxygen in theatmosphereto create milky white clouds, which could be seen easily by scientists and the public this morning in clear skies along the U.S. Northeast coast, according to NASA. Two of the rockets also carried instruments for measuring atmospheric temperature and pressure.

Pictures of the ATREX clouds will help scientists better understand the drivers of the high-level jet stream, ultrafast winds that blow 60 to 65 miles (96 to 105 kilometers) above Earth’s surface.

This is the same region of Earth’s upper atmosphere—the ionosphere—where strong electrical currents naturally flow, NASA says. Tracking how the jet stream moves can therefore give researchers insight into the roots of high-altitude electrical turbulence, which can disrupt satellites and radio communications.
